Over the years candy commercials have changed drastically – what use to be more traditional and informational advertising has morphed into ads based largely on in-your-face irreverent humor. That said, we’ve decided to highlight some candy ads from the past and present – classic commercials that had us humming the theme song for decades and modern commercials that simply make us laugh.
There might not be a more immortal candy commercial than the Tootsie Pop campaign. Not only are the animations 100% unique and identifiable to the brand but also the advertisers did a brilliant job in asking the forever unanswered question: How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? The world may never know…
One of the best things that the M&M ad team has done in the history of their campaigns has been the personification of the M&Ms – creating endearing characters out of the candy pieces themselves. Although many ads have featured the M&M characters since their inception, none is funnier than this cannibal comedy.
While Skittles bite sized candies have run the gantlet from classic to comedic, their slogan Taste the Rainbow has been a consistently successful workhorse for the product. In these videos below, you’ll see a classic Skittles ad with a whimsical tone and a hilariously cheeky modern commercial – both extremely different creations but both very successful ads under the Taste the Rainbow umbrella.
There isn’t a person alive who couldn’t finish the phrase, “Give me a break – give me a break – break me off a piece of…” Easily one of the most contagious candy ad campaigns ever created, the Kit-Kat bar has ridden their flagship jingle all the way from the 80s into the modern day and has created countless versions of the Kit-Kat ad below.
Most likely a direct competitor of Skittles, Starburst fruit chews has also swapped back and forth between fanciful commercials and straight-up wacky humor. While their tagline changes regularly and their message these days isn’t necessarily timeless, their bizarre brand of comedy is definitely worth a peak. Check out these funny Starburst commercials!
Another of the more memorable candy campaigns to ever hit the airwaves was the one that showed us that there is no wrong way to eat a Reese’s. Debuting sometime in the 80s and stretching for more years than one can count, this series of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercials must be the inspiration for many of the contemporary episodic campaigns such as, “Can Geico really save you money on car insurance?”
There has been very few celebrity candy endorsements in the history of sweets but one undeniable partnership was formed between Butterfinger candy bars and the one and only Bart Simpson. Acting as the poster child for Butterfinger’s most successful stint of ads in their history, Menace to Society Bart Simpson made it very clear that “Nobody better lay a finger on my Butterfinger.”
Snickers candy bars has recently veered from their more traditional path and has put together a series of controversial commercials involving Mr. T and, well, Nuts. However, for our purposes here, let us pay homage to the extremely successful campaign that gave Snickers their start and carried them to notoriety – Snickers really satisfies you – simple but tried and true.
When it comes to Twizzlers licorice, you either love it or hate it. However, when it comes to their advertising history, who can argue their champion campaign from the 80s and 90s that featured nothing more than giant mouths and animated licorice? Whether you like the product or not, the commercials had a decidedly attractive and “hip” edge that few could resist.
Ah, who could forget the European inspired Mentos commercials from the 80s and 90s; ironic plot reels without dialogue and a light-hearted theme song that sounded like something off of the opening credits of Full House. In fact, these Mentos ads were so iconic in their day that The Foo Fighters rock band even staged a music video to look and feel like a Mentos ad.
As the last entry on this list, please enjoy this trip down memory lane and always remember; any troublesome situation can be made better with a roll of Mentos in hand. Mentos, the fresh maker.
